There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the future of Microsoft Dynamics GP. Rumours about its end-of-life have sparked confusion and concern among users, leaving many wondering what’s really going on. We're here to clear up the confusion and provide the facts!
Microsoft Dynamics GP, originally known as Great Plains, has been a trusted business solution since 1981. After being acquired by Microsoft in 2001, it became an integral part of Microsoft’s ERP offerings. Over the years, GP has evolved from a DOS-based accounting system to a powerful, SQL Server-based solution widely used by small and medium-sized businesses.
One of the key concerns about Dynamics GP is its ongoing support. In 2019, Microsoft introduced a new approach to supporting its products called the Modern Lifecycle Policy. This shift means that Dynamics GP versions 2016 and beyond are under continuous support, including regular updates and bug fixes, without the fixed expiration dates of the past.
Previously, Dynamics GP was under Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy, which included defined periods for support. For example, versions like GP 2015 and 2016 had clear end dates for mainstream and extended support.
While the newest versions of Dynamics GP are covered under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, some older versions are nearing the end of support. Here’s a breakdown of critical dates:
End of Mainstream Support:
End of Extended Support:
For those using Dynamics GP 2018 or GP 2018 R2, the good news is that upgrading to version 18.2 or later (with a compatible tax release or hotfix) will bring your system under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, ensuring continued support.
If you’re using a version of Dynamics GP from 2018 or newer, you can continue to receive support by keeping your system updated to the latest version. However, if you’re on an older version, now is the time to consider an upgrade.
Upgrading ensures your business continues to receive security updates, new features, and tax changes - vital to staying compliant and competitive. For businesses with highly customised systems, upgrading may require careful planning, but the good news is that we're here to help guide you through the process.
In some cases, upgrading might not be feasible due to customisations or missed versions. If your system is too outdated or complex to upgrade, you may need to start considering a new ERP solution such as Dynamics 365 Business Central. Whilst this transition may seem daunting, but with the right guidance, it can be a smooth process.
Dynamics GP isn’t going away and Microsoft has committed to supporting the platform for many years to come, especially for those on the newer versions under the Modern Lifecycle Policy. However, taking proactive steps now will ensure your business remains on track, secure, and ready for future growth!
